about

"Maybe being soft is what makes us worthy of trust."

With this motto, artist Joy Bogat heralds a new musical phase - bolder, more headstrong, but still so warm and inviting that everyone can find their own place in it.
Carried by Bogat's clear and extraordinary voice, her music continues to drift between soul, alternative RnB and indie. Synthesizer and vocal pads, spoken word and grooving beats interweave with a playful lightness that is second to none - and has an absolutely infectious effect on the listener.

"'Fabric of Dreams' has been created over the last three years and has become exactly what I hoped it would be. Like a canvas on which I could place all my influences. Every single song dreams of something different," says Bogat, who lives and works in Hanover, about her second album, which will be released on March 8, 2024 by Berlin-based indie label Listenrecords.

The title alludes to freeing ourselves from the gaze of society, from no longer allowing advertising and social media to dictate what our dreams should and may be woven from. In the opener "Milk and Honey", Bogat explains what this could also mean for the socially exploited body that is overloaded with meanings and demands: „Now you say I look tired, it’s what this world does to me / Last night in my sleep I drank the whole sea but still my skin just wouldn’t shine like in your advertisements / They no longer dictate the fabric of dreams […] / our bodies are part of this story, you don’t know these stories, you don’t know our bodies, you don’t owe our bodies.“

Inspired by her love of books, her living out of radical softness and a process of self-positioning as a Black German woman - Joy Bogat now more than ever lays her cards on the table and lets us share in a rich treasure trove of experiences, melodies and her outstanding talent as a songwriter.

"I still often remain personal in my lyrics. When it comes to loving yourself or the other person, about how we can gently raise our voices on important issues or reconcile within the family; but in my own way I connect these topics much more with the political than before," says the musician, who has just become a mother.

"A Way Out" is the way out of social self-centeredness - and the programmatic conclusion of the album. Like many songs on the album, it is inspired by lines from a book: "A single mind can't tell you the whole truth" - only as a collective can we see the big picture and dream of more than ourselves.

Musically, songs such as the singles "Milk and Honey", "Dreaming", "Everything at Once", "Backwards" and "Raise My Glass" are soul and RnB, "Thirsty", "Confidence" and "No Gravity" are the three more spherical tracks on the album, more electronic, more repetitive. With "Confide in You", Bogat takes a - by her standards - much rougher detour into indie music. On "Fabric of Dreams", she succeeds in combining and reinterpreting all of these styles with her own signature style with a relaxed naturalness.

The empowering, almost healing effect of Joy Bogat's music can also be experienced live in 2024, when she will be touring Germany with the new album and her band.
